KADIN KATO’S REFLECTIONS
During this unfortunate time,
it has been, well, ok for me but other people probably have different opinions.
Well actually, to be honest, the educational portion of each day is always
boring.
For example, I do 3-4 hours
of education per day and during one of those hours I practice piano and
clarinet. I quickly lose interest because I haven’t been assigned new music
pieces for weeks. So, I end up playing the same exact thing each day for an
hour.
The online education hour is
actually pretty interesting because my pre-algebra teacher assigned me and my
classmates assignments on this website called Khan Academy. They keep me busy
because he assigned 169 assignments—each of them on a different topic.
The final hours I use for
reading which is very interesting because I just got interested in this book
series called Magnus Chase. It’s about
Norse mythology like Thor or Odin.
People are saying they miss
their friends but I don’t. I’m not saying I don’t care at all about them. It’s
just because with technology nowadays, we can text, call, or Facetime. I also
play a video game called Minecraft with my friends every day.
Even so, I am getting crazy
staying inside all the time. I’m one of the people that like to stay at home
though I found myself enjoying a random car ride to the restaurant Genki Sushi
to pick up food. So, I guess I could say that this experience has been better
for me than most people.
KACIE KATO’S REFLECTIONS
At first, I really thought
that quarantine would be a pain in the neck . . . and it has been hard. It’s
been difficult for me to feel so restricted because I can’t see any of my
friends or extended family, and I can’t do anything besides finding ways to
entertain myself at home. The most disappointing part of this whole lockdown
for me was the cancellation of Junior prom and my indoor marching band
competition in Dayton, Ohio.
However, what I’ve realized
with the extension of mandatory lockdown and all is that, this time has really
been a blessing in disguise. I may have missed out on things that I had been
looking forward to, and that is disappointing, but I’ve been able to do things
that my schedule hadn’t enabled me to do before. I’ve had a lot of time to
practice my singing and my trumpet playing which I always struggled to do when
I had regular school. I’ve had the time to purge my clothes, watch a ton of tv,
do some drawing, and workout. Most importantly, it gave my family a reason to
be around each other all of the time. In high school, it’s easy to find
yourself always isolated from the rest of the world. In my case it was the
distractions of social media, YouTube/Netflix, an unreasonable amount of
homework, and overall, just deciding to always be cooped up in my room. During
this lockdown though, I’ve been spending a lot more time with my family and
that’s one thing that I’m truly grateful for. I like that my parents are working
from home most of the time so that we’re not away from each other 8+ hours
every day. We’ve been able to do family movie nights, board games, gardening,
and just a lot more as a family. I also really like having a break from
marching band because I now have downtime without three practices a week but at
the same time, I didn’t have to give it up to get that downtime.
During break, I’ve mostly
been doing AP homework because I still have AP tests in May. My teachers have
been doing online meetings and have been sending a lot of videos and study
material. I have to admit, it’s been hard to stay motivated to do work without
solid deadlines. The good thing is that my final grade is based off of all of
the work that I did prior to spring break, so I don’t have to worry about my
final grade anymore. Anyway, I hope everyone is doing really well and I hope
that you have been able to find the silver linings in this situation! Stay
healthy and be safe!
THE
HEART PROJECT
The
Hawaii Conference (the state level division of our denomination, the United
Church of Christ) is encouraging its churches to make art projects that can be
shown to the public to thank all the essential workers who are sustaining
us. Here are some of the results from
our church school families. Awesomeness!!
