EDITOR’S NOTE:  READING THESE NEWSLETTERS

These newsletters are collected as pages on this website.  Think of this website as a book on your coffee table.  When you want to open your book, click on this link:

 Table of content alerts
After you open the book and the website opens, you will find all the newsletters on the right-hand side under the Table of Contents.  Choose the page you want to read and click it open.  I have also added to this website all of the previous newsletters that were sent out just by email.

You don’t really need the CCH emails as long as you can find the book!  The emails just give you the “page number” for the newest newsletter.

ARDIS—SUPERWOMAN

We all owe a massive MAHALO to ARDIS.  The days after the Executive Committee made the hard decision to suspend Sunday worship and then to close the campus were difficult and chaotic.  Keeping us connected to each other, sharing God’s Word, and continuing God’s work were the top priorities.  Communication was key.  The sudden load on our digital resources was a shock to the system.  At different times in these past weeks, Ardis has found herself without wi-fi, with an email system that crashed twice with disastrous consequences, and urgently needing to find a more effective platform, software, and modem.  At the same time, we found ourselves needing to send out an inordinate amount of stamped mail because members hadn’t given us email addresses.  Although we are not out of the woods yet, ARDIS has already done a tremendous amount of work to our benefit!  Thank you for your faithful service, ARDIS!!

PRINCIPAL JUSTIN MEW—WELL DONE, SIR!!

KAISER HIGH SCHOOL RANKED #1 PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN HAWAII BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

The U.S. News & World Report just reported the following:

Overview of Henry J Kaiser High School

Henry J Kaiser High School is ranked first within Hawaii. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Henry J Kaiser High School is 59%. The total minority enrollment is 79%, and 14% of students are economically disadvantaged. Henry J Kaiser High School is 1 of 64 high schools in the Hawaii Department of Education.

It gets even more impressive by the numbers.  Kaiser is ranked #558 out of 17,792 nationally ranked schools with an overall score of 96.86/100.

And, it gets even more gobsmackingly (take that, Kaiser, only a McKinley graduate can come up with that adjective!) impressive . . .  wait for it . . . . . .

Kaiser tied for #1 NATIONALLY in Math and Reading Proficiency (one of five factors used to determine the rankings).  After researching this ranking, Principal Justin discovered that Kaiser is the first public high school in our nation's history to break the 60% math proficiency barrier.  Kaiser's proficiency scores were nearly double Hawaii's average.  It is not an accident that Principal Justin’s abiding improvement goals were/are math and reading proficiency!

Principal Justin (a.k.a. Jedi), we are so proud of you and so happy for all the youth being nurtured and educated under your leadership.  IMUA!

VERY SAD NEWS FROM WILLIE AND ETHEL CHONG

A few days ago, Willie and Ethel were shocked by the news that their oldest son, CLIFFORD, had passed away in his sleep from natural causes (nothing related to the corona virus).  CLIFFORD was 60 years old.  He lived and worked as the Director of Finance of a private company in New Jersey.  His town is right next door to New York.  That whole wider area healthcare systems and mortuaries are dealing with chaos and very high demand.  Therefore, Willie and Ethel cannot get definitive information about the arrangements they have requested.  They simply cannot yet make any plans for CLIFFORD’s memorial at CCH.

At this time, Willie and Ethel are safe at home and being very well cared for as usual by son, Walter, and grandson, Colin.  Unrelated to CLIFFORD’s untimely passing, second son Philip was visiting from the Bay area where he is a teacher who now must work at home.  Philip plans to be in the family home until school begins, perhaps until September, and will be additional support for his parents.  Third son, David, lives in Arizona.  At this time, even though he wants to come home, Ethel is encouraging him to stay in Arizona because of the 14-day quarantine requirement and the present overall uncertainty.

Cards and letters can be sent to Willie and Ethel Chong at:
3214 Ala Laulani St., Honolulu, HI  96818.

CCH IPT WEDNESDAY (INTENTIONAL PRAYER TIME) by Kathy Young

As I sit and write today's Prayer Corner, I think about our blessed day.  Mike and I drove into town to first wish grandson Adam Taba a "Happy 18th Birthday", then to deliver Gwen Murakami's beautiful face masks and other items to a few CCH friends...Joe Lee, Marian Chun, Ku'ulei Williams, Evelyn Lam, Ethel and Willie Chong, and Lorna Choy.  We didn't see Ethel and Willie, but we were treated with far-away glimpses and waves from the others.

It did my heart so much good to gaze upon some of our beloved sisters and brothers in Christ!!

Although the Coronavirus pandemic has kept us physically apart, we still pray together!!

We lift up fervent prayers:
  • of gratefulness and thanksgiving for--thusfar--blessing our CCH family and community with lower-than-expected rates of COVID-19 positive cases and deaths.  Keep us vigilant and obedient, doing what we must to arrest and obliterate this nasty virus.  Help us maintain the "flattened curve"!
  • on behalf of the "front line" workers, in the medical field as well as those who provide us with what we need, allowing us to be healthy, safe, and fed.  Continue to watch over these selfless professionals, dear Lord.
  • that you help us care for one another.  As the weeks turn into months, so many within our church and community may feel lonely and depressed.  Phone calls, texts, emails, blogs (this newsletter is a "blog", thanks to Pastor Frances!!), Facetime...there are so many ways to "reach out and touch someone" with social distancing!!  It's becoming more and more critical that we use our energies to spread God's love...intentionally, and even "virtually"!!!
  • for Reverend Norwick, Pastor Frances, Ardis, Glenn, Nate, Hari.  We don't see them anymore, but they're working harder than ever to "gift us" with worship opportunities, Bible Study offerings, and other programs to encourage us to BE connected...to BE faithful...to BE a family...to BE truly a Community!
  • in support of our leaders!!  Our Executive Committee and Council still meet...via "Zoom", to discuss and determine what is best for God's church in the coming months.
  • for the many who need our prayers and those in our hearts.
